This module will provide in-depth understanding of the management plan process and develop necessary skills for the establishment of World Heritage site management plans. It examines management systems, methodology and frameworks for presenting cultural and natural site management plans. The module explores the challenge of striking a balance between conservation, access, local community interests and sustainable economic use. Within this module students complete a management plan project on a selected site of conservation interest.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

• Demonstrate clear understanding of the role of the management plan in conserving World Heritage properties with applicability to other sites;
• Apply management plan methodology to cultural and natural sites;
• Establish a management plan framework;
• Identify stages of activities and stakeholder involvement in the management plan process;
• Critically assess external factors affecting management of World Heritage properties.
