This course will be students first introduction to anatomical terminology, and will focus on the structure and function of the human upper limb. Through a series of lectures and practical-based sessions the various contributing elements of the upper limb including bones, muscles, nerves and blood vessels will be considered in detail. This module forms part of the core curriculum for the MB BCh BAO degree in medicine.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
Recognise and describe structures of the upper limb including bones, muscles, nerves and blood vessels.
Discuss aspects of function and injury of the upper limb.

Muscles connecting upper limb to the vertebral column
The pectoral region
Articulations of the pectoral girdle
The shoulder joint
The axilla
Brachial plexus
The arm
The elbow joint
The anterior forearm
The posterior forearm
Radioulnar, wrist and hand joints
The hand: intrinsic thenar & hypothenar muscles
The hand: intrinsic hand muscles
Arterial supply of the upper limb
Innervation of upper limb & nerve injury
Lymphatics and venous drainage of the upper limb
