Stepping outside chronological & stylistic parameters this module aims to extend the understanding and appreciation of the history of European painting.
'Art in the Making II' explores Late Medieval and Renaissance art from the perspective of art as a product of its time, considering the likes of artistic eduction, the function and patronage of art, as well as aspect of the structure and making of the works and the myriad characteristic types of art being produced during the period.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this MODULE students should be able to:
- understand the history and use of the main painting techniques of Late Medieval and Renaissance art
- demonstrate an understanding of developments in artistic eduction & practice, from workshop to studio
- outline the function and diverse patronage of art during the period.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is taught via lectures and an additional class in the form of a field trip to the National Gallery of Ireland which will give students the opportunity to look at artworks in the original and to discuss ideas that have been raised in the lectures.
Support material will be available on Brightspace but students are encouraged to visit the library in person, make use of recommended texts, read books, visit galleries and museums and contribute in class.
The forms of assessment are varied and can include the following types: Slide tests, Take-home tests, Comparative assignments, Catalogue essays. All submitted written work should be original, non-plagiarised work in line with university academic integrity guidelines, and undertaken without recourse to generative AI.
