To identify the scholarly basis of factual claims, express and support these in text form, understand scholarly literature sources, explore graphical presentation, design a poster, prepare and present a seminar presentation, and work with an academic mentor to design a research investigation.
The aim of the module is to advance students' oral and written communication skills in the context of a research proposal.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Graphical and text design of a poster on a research topic. Preparation of a slideshow and speech for a seminar on proposed research activity.
Design and planning a research activity with proposal including review of key scholarly sources, formulating objectives and research questions, identification of resources, and specification of timelines.

On successful completion of the module, students are expected to be able to:
Identify and review suitable materials in designing and planning a research investigation;
Scope, structure, draft, edit, and finalise a research proposal;
Create clear, accurate, informative slides for oral communication;
Design and construct a poster with a clear message;
Deliver effectively to a live seminar to audience.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Lectures and small-group exercises on components of writing; individual poster preparation with public display; seminar group practice, with assessment by potential supervisors; research proposal development with an individual academic.
