This module aims to strengthen participants’ skills in delivering impactful lectures in English that effectively convey information and foster learning. Various aspects of effective lecturing are covered, including analyzing the key linguistic features of academic lectures, structuring a talk, adapting to the need of the audience, and addressing follow-up questions. Through practical examples and step-by-step guidance, participants will learn how to present general academic and subject-specific topics confidently and articulately. Strategies for engaging the audience and creating an interactive learning environment will also be explored.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

• Plan and deliver lectures confidently and articulately, adapting the content and language to meet the needs of the audience.
• Structure lectures effectively, ensuring a logical flow of information and engaging the listeners throughout the session.
• Handle follow-up questions fluently and spontaneously, demonstrating the ability to respond to different types of inquiries.
• Use appropriate visual aids and presentation techniques to enhance the delivery of lectures.
• Reflect on individual language and skills development, identifying areas for improvement, and identify research-informed solutions to targeted areas of difficulty.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is taught through a combination of lectures, class discussions based on set readings and workshops. A fourth, essential component will be the participants’ own experience in delivering lectures in English: critical reflection on strengths and areas for further development will inform critical engagement with lectures, discussions and readings.

Each class will comprise a lecture on a specific topic followed by a discussion or reflection or a group activity on the same topic. In class, participants will be expected to contribute actively to the discussion, with a particular view to exploring whether or how the points raised relate to their teaching beliefs and experiences. Reflective tasks will encourage participants to think about their own needs and particular areas for improvement taking into consideration the students and teaching contexts within the disciplinary community they represent. Practical tasks will provide an opportunity to practise lecturing skills and strategies and enhance oral expression, including all aspects of language use (lexis, grammar, syntax, pronunciation, etc.). Small group activities will offer ample opportunities for collaborative learning through the exchange of ideas, sharing of experiences and problem-solving.
