LANG40670 Issues in Assessment

Academic Year 2023/2024

Participants will learn about validity, reliability and assessment design, as well as how to assess the various components of proficiency in English. A framework for analysing and evaluating language learning materials will be introduced. Students will gain experience of working with rubrics and of following moderation and standardization practices. They will learn about approaches to giving feedback and about assessment for learning. They will examine ways of effectively using self and peer assessment in class. The module will also examine the implications for language assessment of ongoing developments in machine learning.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will have:

- demonstrated an understanding of language assessment within educational, political and social policies
- examined principles of test design and evaluation for particular contexts
- investigated different modes of summative and formative assessment
- analysed approaches to providing feedback for learners
- shown an understanding of how theories about language learning might influence test design
