The MLitt degree is a two year research degree (four years part-time) which combines some taught skills elements alongside a major research thesis of 40,000-50,000 words.

UCD School of History is an exciting and dynamic place to study.  Whether you are an undergraduate or a postgraduate, you will belong to a community working at the frontiers of historical knowledge. The School offers a thriving research culture with a range of seminars and in-house conferences organised. UCD is also very conveniently located for the use of Dublin city centre research and cultural institutions, including the National Library of Ireland and the National Archives where an extensive range of manuscripts and state papers are housed.

Research Master’s students may apply to transfer to a PhD programme.

About This Course

Master’s level research aims to develop in the student the skills and competencies required to conduct research.

Schools will assign a principal supervisor to each Research Master’s student, who has primary responsibility for your academic supervision.

This programme is suitable for those who have an interest in a specific area of research and wish to extend their knowledge and understanding. It appeals to those who wish to gain the necessary scholarly skills in the field while still having flexibility in subject matter. This course is also suitable for those who are thinking about doing a PhD in the future, but are unsure if they would like to commit to such an extensive project at first.
