This programme is designed for holders of UCD Graduate Diplomas in the following specialities: Critical Care–Intensive Care, Critical Care-Cardiovascular, Heart Failure Nursing, Paediatric Critical Care and Peri-Operative Nursing.

The purpose of the Master of Science (Nursing) (Critical Care) is to enable the experienced critical care nurse to develop knowledge and skills at an advanced practice level.  The programme is designed for students who wish to deepen and broaden their knowledge and expertise in order to act as clinical leaders in critical care.  

The programme builds upon and advances students’ existing knowledge, skills and values to promote students’ capacities for critical thinking and critical self-appraisal. The purpose of the programme is to advance the students sense of professional awareness and commitment along with professional responsibility and accountability, and to enable students to value learning as a continuous and a necessary process in the context of their professional role.  

Curricula are student-focused, research-led and research informed, with a scholarly approach to programme design, aimed at inspiring a passion and excellence in the learner by forming identity, integrity, commitment and curiosity for the provision of holistic, safe, ethical, compassionate evidence based care.  The programme is designed with the learner at the centre.

The commitment to curricular innovation ensures that there is alignment of programme learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities and assessment, in addition to enhancing the learner experience. Programmes are delivered by experts in the fields of education and practice discipline, ensuring that learners experience a coherent, cumulative, research-based educational programme that meets all academic and professional regulations, standards and requirements.

• Appraise their contribution to advancing nursing knowledge through the process of research activities, dissemination and utilisation.
• Critically analyse and apply research findings informed by accredited, evidence-based principles.
• Demonstrate the ability to formulate judgments that reflect on the wider disciplinary, scientific, professional and ethical issues linked to critical care nursing.
• Integrate knowledge of advanced health assessment, comprehensive health history, critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in the management of the critically ill patient.
• On Successful completion of this programme students should be able to: Be an independent learner, recognising the value of lifelong learning and able to use critical questioning, reflection and decision making to build on personal and professional scholarship.
• Use technology effectively to enhance personal and professional development and practice, and the delivery of safe, evidence based healthcare

• All applicants must be listed on the Register of Nurses and Midwives, which is maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

• Applicants must be employed in clinical practice in Ireland while undertaking the programme

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL may be granted in respect of individual modules if applicants can demonstrate that the modules' learning outcomes have been achieved through prior credentialled or experiential learning.
