From your first day in the dissection lab to the start of your clinical training, student life at UCD Medicine is a stimulating, diverse and vibrant experience. When you choose Medicine at UCD, you choose early patient contact, a world-class curriculum and an unrivalled calendar of social and extra-curricular activities.

We believe passionately in training doctors who see the world through the eyes of the patient, and you will interact with and learn from patients throughout your time at UCD. You’ll shadow GPs, learn from patient educators and train at Ireland’s most extensive network of teaching hospitals.

The main hospitals associated with our programme are St Vincent’s University Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. In addition there are more than 20 other training hospitals and more than 100 primary care practices that facilitate your learning.You will also benefit from a diverse range of exciting international placement opportunities.

About This Course

First Year
Focuses on core sciences and their application to Medicine. Highlights include:

Second Year
Focuses on the structure and function of healthy organ systems. Highlights include:

  • Anatomy Dissection
  • Interviewing patients in the community

Third & Fourth Year
Complete the study of organ systems in health and disease and begin clinical attachments. Highlights include:

  • Pathology
  • Microbiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Neurosciences
  • Clinical attachments in hospitals
  • Clinical Diagnosis & Therapeutics
  • Respiratory Diseases

Fifth & Sixth Year
Immersive clinical attachments, instruction in the various medical specialties, clinical elective and professional completion.

The Medicine programme combines lectures, seminars, patient educator sessions, simulations, small group tutorials and clinical bedside learning. Assessment methods include end-of semester exams, practicals and continuous assessment.

Extensive international links offer you a variety of opportunities to widen your experience. Scholarships awarded on the basis of an essay competition are available to support elective periods in centres of clinical and research excellence in the USA, Europe and Malaysia.

Graduates of the School have achieved worldwide recognition in clinical practice, research and healthcare leadership. Upon graduation, you must complete one year as an intern to gain full registration with the Irish Medical Council. You may then pursue training towards a career in a wide variety of specialties, in diverse settings, including hospitals and primary care facilities, or laboratory-based diagnosis and research.

Candidates must agree to undergo testing to assess levels of immunity to certain infectious diseases as per
the current UCD School of Medicine Infectious Diseases Policy. The results of such tests are not used to
determine entry to the course but are used to provide the student with a suitable immunisation programme
schedule.

Incoming Stage 1 undergraduates can usually select an Elective in the Spring Trimester. Most continuing undergraduate students can select up to two Elective modules (10 Credits) per stage. There is also the possibility to take up to 10 extra Elective credits.
