Strategic management helps practitioners to make sense of and respond to challenges faced when attempting to secure the long run viability of their organisations. In the first part of the module, we will examine a variety of analytical tools and perspectives that are seen to aid strategic decision-making. In so doing, we will examine important concepts such as industry structure, business models, competitive positioning, scope and direction of the organisation. In focusing specifically on international arenas, we will then proceed to examine some of the challenges associated with growth and expansion in international markets and will explore key considerations when attempting to structure and organise the international activities of large organisations.

AI POLICY: AI can be a very useful aid in learning about competitive strategy and I expect you to use it in your preparation and case analysis before class. However, AI has fundamental limitations that could seriously undermine your learning. It is important that you:
· Openly embrace AI as part of your learning journey.
· Realise that AI is not a substitute for the enjoyable and captivating experience of learning competitive strategy.
· Learn how to prompt AI effectively to get the learning outcomes that you desire. This will take much practice and experimentation.
· Do not blindly trust what AI gives you. Develop ways to fact-check its responses. The more you come to understand competitive strategy the better you will become at evaluating the content that AI provides you.
· Never present work produced by or with the assistance of AI as your own original material. To do so will put you in breach of academic integrity regulations.
